Should cGMP be Required for all US-based Hemp CBD Manufacturers?

When we considered getting our CBD extraction and private labeling lab cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Processes) Certified, we thought it would mean:

Tens of thousands of dollars in expenses…

Hundreds of company standards in need of documentation…

Months of grueling, detailed, unsexy work…

Stress! Lots of stress!

And when it came time to decide whether we should do it, our decision was…

“Let’s do it!”

My partners and I decided to go ahead and get Spectrum Labs cGMP certified.

Why We Decided to Become GMP Compliant

We decided to obtain GMP certification to establish a point of differentiation with other hemp labs, to demonstrate to our customers that we are committed to high quality standards, to be prepared for international opportunities and to provide accurate dosage composition and repeatability within our products.

And honestly, we felt like it was the right thing to do. We don’t know exactly what will come of this GMP certification. This is one of those big decisions that you hope will pay off, but ultimately there’s no guarantee that it will translate into rewards.

We see states like New York requiring all hemp CBD products to be manufactured using GMP.

South American and European countries are setting regulations requiring CBD to be made with GMP standards.

Private label clients that reach out to us are very concerned with safety and legitimate manufacturers. One potential client recently asked me, “Is your lab legit, or do you guys work out of a dirty garage?” I couldn’t help but laugh. It’s funny, but not unheard of.

The future of the CBD hemp industry depends on companies who act like adults and provide safe, standardized products. I think GMP is part of the growing up phase of our industry. At least, I hope so.

Follow Along on Journey to GMP Certification

I was surprised at how little information I found on the web directly from companies discussing this very time-consuming, investment-heavy and stressful process.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll provide updates on our journey to GMP certification. The hope is that it will 1) show US-based and international customers our commitment to quality and 2) help other cannabis companies who are considering GMP certification take a peek behind-the-scenes of this monster process.
